I have this really bad habit of needing things to be fully ironed out and structured for perfection before I can start something. Or at least in my head it needs to look like it’s going to work out perfectly. It’s not logical but it’s one of the many (many) things that I need to work on (and once I actually find a therapist it will be on a very long list) because trying to make everything perfect tends to be what keeps me from actually starting.
My goal this year is to grow and to take risks and chances. To be more open to opportunities that present themselves instead of weighing every possible outcome, both good or bad, and trying to have things perfectly put together. In a time where the next day isn’t promised to you, there will be things that you literally will only have that once chance in a lifetime to say yes.
There’s this quote, can’t quite remember who it’s by, that says “You don’t have to always be great to start, but you do have to start in order to be great.” Sometimes going after your dreams feels like you’re in this forever race and so many people just keep passing you by, be it on the first lap around, the third lap around, or what you may have deemed the final lap around. The thing is that often times, the struggle to keep pumping our legs and moving forward is so overwhelming that you don’t realize that the real race hasn’t even started yet.
I have a runner friend, who actually runs marathons for fun (I’ll never understand what’s so fun but hey, who am I lol) and she told me that those first few laps are just the warm up and that the real race doesn’t even begin until they’re in their final couple of laps when they have to kick things up a notch.
From the outside looking in, you’re thinking like, how are those first few laps just a warmup. I get tired just watching marathons you know. She told me that it’s in those final laps, right as she ramps things up, where her training really starts to kick in. It’s where all the foundation that she had laid to be able to finish the race strong comes into play.
It made me think about the fact that there are so many times that we quit right when we should actually be hitting our stride. The race may take a long time to finish but we can’t lose steam just as we should be ramping things up. We’ve worked hard to pursue these passions of ours and just because they’re not happening as quickly as we want them to, doesn’t mean that they won’t ever happen.
So don’t get discouraged because others running alongside you seem to be passing you by. Their destination is different from yours. Focus on finishing what you started. You’ve worked way too hard and put in too much training to give up now. I firmly believe it will all be worth it in the end. The key is to make it to that finish line. Until next time… #BeResilient #BeConsistent #BeDriven
