April feels like the month where there should be a lot of things springing to life or at least forward in progress. In a sense I suppose they are for me and seemingly everyone around me. It’s hard to find things to look forward to with everything that’s going on around us in the world, but the reality is that none of us can control any of that. What we can control and focus on is doing our part to put out hope and love in this world through our art and other creative endeavors.
My friends (Ashleigh and Courtney) said on their twitch stream the other day that we as artists have to keep pushing our art out there and making people see and hear us through our creativity and through our positive actions. I mean they said it far more eloquently than that but that was the gist. They really made me see and feel like, even though I’m just one person, my words do matter, therefore my books matter. I repeat that to all of you who are questioning whether any of it matters as the world around us is devolving. I think all of our art matters.
I know that these days when we look around it appears like certain powers that be are attempting to strip the arts and the freedoms to express ourselves away from us. It’s as if they don’t appreciate that every monumental moment that has happened in this world, in this country, has been cemented into history artistically in some way. Whether it be in stories told with powerful messages in our fiction, poetry or songs written, or sculptures that have been constructed, or paintings that have been crafted, or the movies that have been directed and produced. The significance of art is undeniable and to have it be threatened the way that it’s been threatened in these past few years is terrifying to say the least. Add to that the threat that AI poses to any and all art mediums which people who aren’t artists don’t seem to understand the gravity of what it actually means.
I think in a moment where it’s easy to become disheartened and to throw our hands up and say what’s the point, we have to dig in even more. We have to hold onto the dreams and the passion that we have for our art and remember that there are people out there who still need the art we have to offer and who are still waiting to see themselves in the art that we produce.
I’m publishing a new book this year (hopefully a second one before the year is out) and I have so many friends who are also publishing or putting out new music or making new short films and I think it’s all necessary and imperative that we keep pushing through and spring into our next phase and don’t take your foot off the gas, for anyone. Remember how powerful you are and that your art, whatever form you create in, it matters. It matters most to the people who are waiting to feel seen and heard in the art that you produce.
Until next time… #BePurposeful #BeBold #BeFearless
