It’s All In How You Word Things

I saw this video on Ms. L’s timeline on Facebook and it spoke volumes to me.  Words can be so powerful and you can say things in so many different ways that take on many different meanings to people.  Be mindful of what you say to others, not just the tone in which you say it, but the words that you choose to express yourself.  It’s also a reminder, on the business side of things, that everyone can use a good writer and if words are not your thing, if you don’t always choose the best words for the appropriate situation, then by all means please hire a writer.

You Have What You Need For the Season You Are In

The season you are in 2

I have a lot of expectations for myself, a lot of big dreams that take putting in a lot of work.  Unfortunately, a lot of the reason that I end up giving up on some of them is because I’m afraid that I’ll never be able to do it perfectly and of course if it’s not done right then it just shouldn’t be done at all.  The problem with that logic is that nothing ends up ever getting done because perfection just doesn’t exist.  Sadly, knowing something logically does not stop you from continuing the same bad habit.

Sometimes you feel like you just don’t have everything you need to accomplish what it is that you want to get accomplished, in order for it to be done just right.  Truth is that God gives us everything that we need for the moment that we are in and if we don’t have it, it’s because we don’t need it yet.  He would never give us the purpose that he gives us, the passion that he gives us, if he were not going to give us the proper tools and skillset to make those things a reality.

I talked with a friend yesterday and she asked me when I was going to start using the YouTube channel that I have and putting it out there that I can sing as well as write.  Someone else asked me about recording my poetry and putting it on there as well.  I came up with quite a few excuses, I’m scared of the camera, I’m afraid that people won’t like it, I don’t think anyone would even look at it, and so on, and so on.

The pressure to be accepted, or to even want to be accepted, is oftentimes overwhelming but then I had to look at it from the other side of things.  What if someone did like it, what if people did look at it, what if me being less afraid could help someone else out there see that they don’t have to be afraid to do it and should just go for it.  What if something I am not doing could help someone else with the same fears?

So this year I am going to put my YouTube channel to good use and promote my other talents, and I’m also going to publish that ebook for Writer’s who Self-Sabotage themselves (When Fear is Knocking) along with self-publishing my next Novel (When Love Calls) and finishing my next two novels (Through the Looking Glass, and The Weight of HER).  I am not going to focus on what I don’t have, but rather focus on what God gave me for the season that I am in right now.

2014 is the year to stop striving for perfection and just strive for completion.  So are you going to take whatever leap of faith you are afraid of taking this year and just get it done?  It doesn’t have to be perfect, but no one will ever be able to see it if it is not at least complete!

I Figured Out the Real Reason I Can’t Finish My Novel

finishing that novelI was reading an article in the Writer’s Magazine about how hard it is when you are writing something that is personal and that closely mirrors your own experiences somehow, even if it was a piece of fiction that was loosely based on your own truth.  It occurred to me after reading this article that this could definitely be the reason that I can not seem to finish my current novel that I am working on.

When I think about it, I haven’t lost the passion for my current novel, I haven’t become bored with the story, I haven’t become tired of the characters, in fact it is quite frustrating that I have so much passion for this unfinished novel and yet I can not seem to actually finish it.  Now granted I have many things that legitimately take up my time like being a mother, being back in school and working on my master’s degree, working on writing articles and this blog as well as publishing my magazine.  However, having other responsibilities has never stopped me before in finishing something.

Sitting and thinking about it, what is really holding up the process, I am now almost convinced that it has more so to do with my next novel that I am planning to write then the actual novel I am trying to finish.  My next novel (not revealing the title just yet), while fictionally written, will not just be loosely based on my own personal life, but it will actually touch on a large part of my childhood and the tumultuous relationship that I have with my mother and the emotional baggage that I have when it comes to her.  Even though I am fictionalizing the story quite a bit, the premise is going to touch on a lot of emotions that I am ambiguous about dealing with.

I feel like it is a novel that I need to write to work through some things and it is one that it took me a long time to even be ready to write and I have to wonder if this stalling tactic is somehow a sign that I am not as ready to write it as I thought I was.  But when I think about it, I am ready but then I’m still not sure if I really am.  My first novel, The Diary: Succession of Lies, took a lot out of me to write because it was extremely personal to me as well and it also took some time for me to get through writing it because I was writing through a painful time.

One would think that to write your pain out on the page it would be simple and that it would flow like a river of water.  I think that there is this myth that writing the personal stories takes less time and that it is somehow easier to do.  While this may in fact be true for some there are countless stories that I have read of other writers who struggled the most on the work that was more closely related to their personal experiences.  Ironically, the personal stories, or the fiction stories that are based in truth, are usually the best ones.  There is heart in those stories and they become more relatable to others because someone else may be experiencing the same things that you have already gone through.

I write for many reasons but in large part because I know I can’t be the only one experiencing some of the things that I have gone through.  If I can touch even just one person then I have served a purpose with my words and that is all I really want to do.  In fixing what is wrong you have to first understand what the problem truly is.  Now that I have identified the problem in why I am stuck in this novel and held back from starting the next, I think I can do something to change.  If you are stuck maybe it’s time that you stop to figure out the real reason that has you stalled.

In Need of a Special Place to Write

Parisian scenery 2

When I start to think of a special place to be able to write my mind starts to wonder off and think of the places that would be special to me that I can’t really get to right now.  What a dream it would be to sit in a coffee shop or restaurant in New York somewhere (preferably Manhattan) or even on a park bench in Central Park.  Or how wonderful it would be to sit in a café in ParisFrance or to sit somewhere inside the LouvreMuseum and soak up all of the artistic inspiration.  I can even imagine sitting in some Italian villa by the water and taking in the scenery while I let my characters fill the pages with their stories.  Unfortunately, that is not my present reality.

When I was younger I used to be able to write anywhere, no matter what my surroundings were.  I was able to block out all of the outside noise and I would even be able to tune out all of the negativity that was taking place around me.  For hours I would just write and write, and read, and then write again.  It wasn’t so hard then to focus my thoughts and the story ideas that kept creeping their way into my mind.  I didn’t need quiet for concentration (although too much quiet makes me unable to write as well), nor did I need a breathtaking atmosphere.  All I needed was my pen and my notebook and the rest would pretty much take care of itself.  I would really like to get back to that but I am not sure that it is a possibility.

When I am at home, sitting at my desk, there might eventually be some writing that gets done but only if I don’t think about the laundry that needs to be washed, or the dinner that needs to be cooked, or the homework that my daughter needs to finish up, or the homework that I need to finish, or the cleaning that needs to be done, or the groceries that I need to go buy, or the bills that are behind and need to be paid.  After everything else that has to be done in the house I am usually too tired and drained to write.  So where can I go to just sit and write and be productive in getting my work done.

I must admit that I get a lot of writing done sitting in a Starbucks (doesn’t really matter which one) but the problem with that is the aroma of all of the coffee that my budget doesn’t allow me to buy.  It really is torture to sit in a coffee shop and not be able to drink any coffee.  Some would say that there’s always the library but for some reason being surrounded by thousands and thousands of books doesn’t actually make me want to sit and write but rather go pick out books to read.

I need a place to write that allows me to only think about my characters and their story; a place where the words will just flow without a struggle and where I almost can’t stop the words from coming.  For now I’ll just have to make what I have work for me instead of allowing it to work against me.

Sometimes It Is Risky to Be Yourself

risk of not being yourselfI can think of about a dozen people who I admire.  People whose success I would love to have. People whose life seems so ideal and who I wish I could be like in one way or another.  I think that we all have those days where there is someone who we wouldn’t mind trading places with, even for a day.  However, we can only ever be ourselves and we have to learn to be the best person that we can be.

People always declare how you should be an original version of yourself and not a bad imitation of someone else.  You’re supposed to achieve the level of success you want by remaining true to who you are and not copying anyone else.  I definitely believe that a person should always be who they are but being original can be tricky.

There is always the risk that someone won’t be accepting of you or what you do and as a writer, while it is not important for everyone to like you or your writing you have to be accepted on some level to be successful.  The thing is, I am me, I am who I am, love me or hate, take it or leave it, and I won’t apologize for it.  However, sometimes there are days when I feel like being myself is either not good enough for people or that people just can’t handle who I really am.

I know you’re not supposed to care about who accepts you and who doesn’t but what if I do care?  What if I want people to care about my words and my feelings and what I’m going through?  What if I want people to listen to what I have to say and what my ideas are and not dismiss them as if they don’t matter?  What if I want people to accept me, flaws and all, and stop wishing that I was something that I am not?

Writers are typically thought of as different, and weird, and isolated but that doesn’t mean we want to be.  I am definitely not like a lot of other people and I have spent a large part of my adolescent years trying to be what everyone else wanted me to be, never really being who I was.  Sometimes it seems like in finally being who I am and not trying to be some version of somebody else I end up standing alone a lot of the time.  I wonder whether or not I should have just kept being the copy everyone seemed to like better.  Have you ever felt like being yourself just wasn’t good enough?

The Words We Say

words have power

I was reading some responses to an email interview that I just did with a wonderful author (the interview will be in the next issue of Write 2 Be Magazine) and something she said in her response to one of the questions struck a chord with me.  There is so much power in words that people don’t even realize exists.

There is an old saying that I remember because when I was younger people (people being bullied in particular) would constantly repeat it.  “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me”.  I don’t know who ever came up with that saying but it couldn’t be any further from the truth.

Words hurt.  These days, words can kill, or literally lead to someone not wanting to be on this earth anymore and taking their own life.  Words hold so much weight to them.  They change lives and they sometimes help people through moments in their lives when they wouldn’t be able to cope otherwise.

I think that sometimes people take for granted how their words can be hurtful to someone or even how much their words can possibly help someone.  I think the three words that people take for granted the most are “I Love You”.  There are so many children today going through life changing moments in their lives and their going through without feeling like they are loved.  There are people who almost never hear those words and the damage that is done by not hearing them.

So if you haven’t been using your words carefully, or wisely, there is no better time to start like the present.  If there’s someone that you need to say something to, something you know that they need to hear, don’t take it for granted that you will always have a chance to.  Your words can change someone’s life.  Just remember that the next time you use your words, that they have power.  Don’t underestimate that power.

The Before and the After—A Picture Tells the Whole Story

Anyone who knows me knows that I absolutely hate taking pictures.  Not taking pictures from behind the camera lens but to actually be in front of the camera lens itself.  So I’ve been on a weight loss journey for the last few years now and I committed to this journey no matter how long it took for me to get to a place of being healthy (and yes thinner too) and happy.  I also knew that I couldn’t do this quickly and rapidly because I had tried that before and it didn’t stick and that I didn’t want to lose weight surgically (not knocking it for anyone who has had weight loss surgery—just not for me) but rather naturally and that meant it was going to have to be slow and steady.

I’ll admit that at certain periods throughout the process it has been slower than others and of course there’s moments where you reach a new stage and you plateau.  However, I have managed to remain vigilant and have lost well over a hundred pounds but yet I still don’t like taking pictures.  My best friend asked me once if I had any before pictures so that I had something to compare things to because I constantly have an issue of looking in the mirror and thinking that nothing has changed regardless of the fact that my clothes have gotten looser on me and my face is visibly different, but as I stated before I have never liked to take pictures with me in them.

So today when I went to the gym (knowing that I had taken a picture for the membership card when I first joined the gym) I asked if I could take a new picture for my membership card.  When she took the picture and printed out the new card I took out my old one and looked at the side by side view (you can see it below-sorry it’s not a clearer picture) and the difference was, in my opinion, very noticeable.  I was ecstatic and overjoyed and of course I went and showed everyone in the gym my before and after and one lady even pointed to the before picture and asked who it was.  That motivated me even more.

Here's my before and after... See the difference!
Here’s my before and after… See the difference!

What does any of this have to do with my writing you might ask?  Well you know they say a picture is worth a thousand words and in today’s case my before and after pictures made a lot of things clearer to me.  That before picture was not a happy woman, perhaps a woman who faked it with some success, but definitely not happy.  But the after picture was a happy person, a more confident person, a more secure person, and a healthier person.  It in many ways mirrors my journey of writing that I spoke of with such frustration in yesterday’s post.

My writing career, years ago, around the time of that before picture, was existent (barely) but it wasn’t moving in any direction.  It had gotten off the ground (maybe about a couple inches) but it hadn’t took off, it hadn’t even gotten midway, it was just stagnant hovering somewhere around the point of the wheels of a plane being an inch off the ground but not yet ready to take off.  It has been a slow journey in that regard as well but unlike with my weight loss journey where I had succumb to the reality that slow and steady is better for me and in the end will garner more promising results, more lasting results, with writing I had wanted it to be a rush to take off.  I hadn’t thought about the fact that if slow and steady can win the race in one area, why wouldn’t it be the right track in the other area as well.

My writing career is still definitely not where I want it to be but it is definitely beginning to take shape and it seems to be ready to take off.  Just as with my before and after pictures in my road to a healthier and happier version of myself, I couldn’t see the progress before and it appeared as if nothing was really happening, my writing career has its before and after points as well.  My writing career, my writing style, has changed and taken different shapes right along with me and looking at the body of my work over the years I can see the progress now.  I can see the fruits of all of my hard work and I am just as overjoyed at that as I was to look at my before and after pictures from this morning.

Sometimes to see the bigger picture, you really do have to capture it in a picture.  A picture doesn’t just show the physical changes in a person but sometimes you can see a whole story in the person you are looking at in that picture, the emotional changes, the mental changes, the career changes.  So what would your before and after of you look like?  What story would it tell to the world?

A Day for Promoting Oneself

I am constantly told that I don’t market myself well enough (not a good tooter of my own horn) and that I don’t promote myself as much as I should.  So every now and then I think it would be good to promote myself and some of the things that I am working on.  Of course lately the two biggest things I am working on are my novel (which I plan on finishing during CampNaNoWriMo), and my new magazine.  Speaking of the magazine, the third issue was just released on Friday and since it is International Women’s History Month, I dedicated this issue to women and their strength, honor, and power of words.  All of the material in the issue is by women and the author interview is with Ms. LaMonique Hamilton, a future media mogul, is my personal favorite.  Here are a few other things I wanted to share:

Write 2 Be Magazine is Seeking Authors to Interview

Write 2 Be Magazine is looking for authors to interview and who would like to bring attention to their published work and discuss their journey within their writing career.  Please submit all requests for an email interview to write2bemagazine@yahoo.com and for those who live in the DMV area, you can request a face to face interview if you would prefer.  I look forward to being able to help bring attention to the work of more talented writers and poets, in particular those who are just getting started on their journey.

March Writing Prompt

Every month there will be a writing prompt that will hopefully get you thinking about the beginning of a new story.  In particular I thought this would be helpful for those who struggle with how they are going to start their next story.  Perhaps you could find a prompt that you spark the next novel on your list.  You might even produce a short story that you would like Write 2 Be to publish in the next issue.

Don’t Forget to like us on facebook https://www.facebook.com/Write2BeMagazine

and follow us on twitter https://twitter.com/write2bemag.

I have a few other projects that I have in the works, one being a collaborative project, but I am not quite ready to share and promote those just yet.  Also I wanted to open my self-promotion posts up to any of you artists’ who have projects that you might want to share in the comments section.  Feel free to let me and my readers know what you have coming down the pipeline, I’d love to check it out and I’m sure others would too!

I hope to see what wonderful artists’ you are soon!

Writer’s Block: Real or Figment of the Imagination?

I read a blog post yesterday about writer’s block, actually more about how writer’s block does not exist.  Of course everyone has their own opinions on the matter but I felt like I had to share mine.  I would like to say that I agree with this blog post and that when you can’t write you should just (basically) suck it up and get over it and put some words on the page.

I would love to say that it is easy to move past the blank screen and produce greatness (or at least a first draft towards greatness anyway).  I have a real problem with people who think that writer’s block is something that is just another excuse not to write or a procrastination technique.  Granted there are some who do use it as an excuse and they are not genuinely blocked, however, this does not mean that every person with writer’s block is not truly blocked.

I have been through moments where I have gotten up at the designated time, prepared adequately for the work to get done, and planted my butt in the chair for hours just waiting for the words to come.  They didn’t come.  For a long time they just wouldn’t come.  Maybe it was because I was depressed at that time or because of stress, or maybe the project just wasn’t right for me, but for whatever reason, the words wouldn’t come.  I tried the “just put the words on the page” method but when the words were garbage and didn’t produce anything of value then they just didn’t mean as much.

I know that there are people who say that you should write even if what you are writing is garbage but I don’t agree with that.  It is a waste of energy that could be saved up to produce work that can actually be crafted and molded into something of purpose.  Sometimes your mind just needs a vacation and sometimes you are just emotionally unable to tap into that creative resource for a small period of time (not saying that it is okay for you to remain in that state) and that is what I consider a writer’s block.

I don’t determine writer’s block as just being too distracted to put the words on the paper.  That is just you needed to buckle down and focus.  I don’t count you choosing to party all night so then you can’t get up to show up to produce the words as a writer’s block.  That just means that you need to straighten out your priorities.  I don’t count the excuse of having the words trapped up in your head because you haven’t figured out how to get it on the paper (and I have made this excuse many times) as writer’s block.  That is just being a little lazy and making a lot of excuses.

Writer’s block, to me, is when the words just won’t come; the struggle is there, the determination is there, the priority is there, the focus is there, but the words still won’t come.  I believe that writer’s block is a lot more about a person’s emotional state when they are trying to produce work.  Yes writing is typically about letting your emotions fuel the words but when they instead block the words then there might be some deep seeded issues that they have to deal with.

Writer’s block is very real to me and maybe this person who wrote the blog post expressing their view that it isn’t may never have had the displeasure of experiencing it, doesn’t make it any less real.  What are your feelings about writer’s block?  Do you feel like it’s real or do you think that it’s a figment of people’s imagination?
